A new year, a new you.
If you’re like most, you have your eyes on meeting important goals this year. However, like most, you don’t have the tools you need to maintain your goals.
You know what I’m talking about. You’ve been down this road before. You have your list of resolutions you want to meet this year: lose weight. make more money. go on more vacations. eat healthier. spend more time with family.
But haven’t you been down this road before?
There’s a reason why personal trainers, gyms, and life coaches make so much more money in the beginning of the year than later on in the year.
You have great intentions. You want to change. In fact, you don’t want to just change, you want to get better. Because when you get better, life gets better. You feel better. About yourself, and what you’ve built for yourself.
But intentions only get that spark going. Intentions, the way we define that term now, is only wishful thinking.
In order to crush your resolutions/goals this year, you need to do three things differently:
- Redefine intention.
- Assess level of hope.
- Set triggers.
Let’s go over each. Intention is not wishful thinking. On December 31st, stating, “I will lose 25 lbs by June” with nothing to back it up is wishful thinking. Setting intention that works looks like this.
Redefine intention.
Intention = goals + strategies + purpose
- Lose 25 lbs by June 1st (goal/what)
- Go to the gym 3x per week. Eat three servings of greens daily. Drink 1 full glass of water upon waking, before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (strategies/how)
- I’m determined to join a neighborhood group for a Tough Mudder race at the end of the year. (purpose/why)
For each resolution on that list, do you have each of the three components?
Assess hope.
On a scale of 1-10, how hopeful are you that you’ll meet your goal?
- Assess agency on a scale of 1-10. How much belief do you have in your ability and motivation to meet your goals?
- Assess pathways on a scale of 1-10. How many different routes/alternatives to you have to achieving that goal?
- Assess goal clarity on a scale of 1-10. How clear are you on your goals? (Think back to SMART goals).
Set triggers.
While you’re at it, assess: how many reminders (e.g., pictures, affirmations on bathroom mirrors, phone alerts) you have to keep you motivated and reminded.
Once you have the first two steps nailed down, flood your surroundings with reminders of your goals.
It’s time to level-up. Evolve, don’t just transform.
